The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) chapters of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) on Monday blocked the university’s two main gates, preventing vehicles from moving in and out, as their nationwide strike entered its fourth day, today May 4, 2026.
The blockade is a local solidarity action tied to a strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU, which commenced on Friday, May 1, 2026, following the Federal Government's failure to finalise the 2009 Renegotiation Agreement and to pay outstanding allowances owed to non-academic staff across Nigerian universities.
At the heart of the dispute is a salary disagreement dating back to the 2009 agreement, in which the unions demanded a 45% salary increase. The Federal Government, however, unilaterally proposed 30% — a move the unions rejected, arguing it violated the collective bargaining process.
The agreement had also established the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS II) for non-academic staff, which covers specific payments for extra duties including responsibility allowances for Registrars and Bursars, shift duties, overtime, and field trip supervision.
Beyond salaries, the unions are pressing the government to honour commitments made under the agreement to reverse institutional decay through massive financial intervention, guarantee that Governing Councils operate freely within the law without external interference, and ensure that the appointment of university leaders is strictly merit-based.
As of Monday, May 4, the Federal Government has entered into discussions with the JAC leadership in a bid to end the industrial action.
