The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recalled a batch of Sporidex Suspension, a commonly prescribed children's antibiotic, after detecting an impurity that could weaken the drug's effectiveness and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026, NAFDAC said the affected product is Sporidex Suspension 125mg/5mL whose batch number is DFG4606A. The recall was initiated voluntarily by the drug's manufacturer, Ranbaxy Nigeria Ltd, a subsidiary of Sun Pharma, after quality checks found an impurity level above approved limits. The recall was earlier reported by TheCable, on Friday, 24, 2026, which cited NAFDAC's statement on the affected batch.
Sporidex Suspension contains cephalexin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in children, including infections of the throat, ears, skin, bones, teeth, urinary bladder, and kidneys. According to NAFDAC, using the affected batch could reduce the drug's ability to clear infections properly, potentially leading to delayed recovery, worsening illness, or treatment failure. The agency also warned that reduced effectiveness could contribute to antimicrobial resistance, and flagged a higher risk of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach upset, and skin rash.
NAFDAC has directed its zonal offices nationwide to track down and remove the affected batch from circulation, instructing distributors, pharmacies, and hospitals, "cease the distribution and sale of the affected batch" as stated in the statement. Anyone holding stock of the product has been told to quarantine it and return it to the point of purchase or the nearest health facility.
