The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), FUOYE Chapter, on June 7, 2026, at LR.03 in the Faculty of Arts Building, inducted new members into the union to serve as student journalists for the institution.

The induction ceremony, which was scheduled for 3:00 p.m., commenced with the welcome address delivered by the President of the Union, Ayeni Kehinde. In his speech, he gave a brief overview of what UCJ entails as well as a short history of the union.

“UCJ started actively here on campus way back in 2019. Around 2020, 2021, and 2022, it got recognized across the nation,” he said.

He also mentioned some notable alumni of the union, including Samuel Awosoro, Daniel Whyte, and Samuel Ajala, who are doing well in their respective careers. He further spoke on the aims of the union and the responsibilities of its members. “We are here to be the voice of the voiceless; we must ensure proper documentation,” he stated.

He also made a key statement, saying, “Every newsroom you want to work with, you can start while on campus.” He concluded by informing the soon-to-be-inducted members that they would be taking an oath of commitment and embarking on a journey to become professional journalists.

Glory Adelowo, the General Secretary of UCJ FUOYE, introduced all the inductees before the keynote speaker was invited to address them.

The keynote speaker, Ms. Adewumi Shukroh Junaid, introduced herself before beginning her address, which focused on the theme of the event, “Ink and Accountability.” She explained the meaning of journalism and what is expected of the new inductees as journalists. “Journalism isn't just about writing stories; it is about protecting truth and making sure voices are heard,” she said.

“In 2018, CJID came to FUOYE, and I was opportune to undergo training. It built a foundation of experience that shaped my journey as a student journalist. I engaged in different activities,” she added.

She also noted that she had been privileged to observe departmental elections, faculty elections, Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections, and state elections. She further emphasized accountability and its importance in journalism.

“Accountability to the truth must always come first before your personal interest. People forget who first published an article, but not those who told the truth,” she stated. “Let your ink reflect your integrity,” she concluded while congratulating the inductees and wishing them a rewarding journey in UCJ FUOYE.

The inductees subsequently took their oath, led by the President, and were presented with their identification cards. Sarah Adeyemo, the Editor-in-Chief, then delivered her goodwill message. Following the goodwill message, refreshments were served to all the newly inducted journalists, after which a photo session was held in earnest. The General Secretary, Glory Adelowo, delivered the closing remarks, while the Treasurer, Aishat Jimoh, concluded the event with a closing prayer.

The ceremony marks the return of integrity, accountability and fact based journalism on campus after years of silence.
